Summer Histematics

The William J. Watkins Sr. Educational Institute in partnership with All This Math, LLC hosts an in-person Summer Program with virtual Saturday sessions throughout the following school year. The Program develops participant’s math skills (arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics and data analysis) – all skills tested on the MCAP exam, critical reading ability and politico-historical awareness. We incorporate the study group model brought forth by the Association of Classical African Civilizations (ASCAC) as a way to provide community education through engaging relevant texts.

Each week of programming focuses on a different text and is accompanied by related math word problems. By the final week of the program, the students are challenged to use their own critical thinking ability to create their own math word problems.

School year programming takes place on Saturdays from 9am – 12pm. This programming will begins in September and runs on Saturdays throughout the school year with the exception of certain school holiday weekends.

Exploring My Roots

The William J. Watkins, Sr. Educational Institute in partnership with the Baltimore Chapter of the African American Historical and Genealogical Society’s Exploring My Roots oral history and genealogy program is designed to empower students with the knowledge of self and the tools needed to explore their personal story and their community’s. Participants gain an understanding of where they came from and how they arrived in their current “place.” This knowledge will aid them in knowing that they are part of a larger whole. The goal is for participants to realize that they “belong” to something much larger than themselves. And, that they are personally connected to their community as well as the larger human community.  Through this knowledge and understanding participants will enhance their vision of the possibilities available to them.
